Stories I Admire

I have been reading 'fanfiction' for several years. Don't believe the stereotypes, there are some absolutely amazing pieces of writing out there! I am going to list some of the best I have encountered here. Please do go and take a look.

For those who have not come across 'fanfiction' before, it is a genre of writing with special rules . . .

  • Other people's characters are borrowed - ONLY borrowed. No challenge to copyright is intended.
Why use these characters? Because you love them and want to enjoy more of them than the originating authors / copyright owners are producing. It can also be a form of self-challenge for the fan author. Published writers hione their skills or try out their ideas sometimes through this medium.

  • The sub-genre is either Romance or Porn or both.

You usually pick a 'One True Pairing', the couple you most believe in as a couple and you write a story that gets them together. You can write any pairing yopu like, but most people have favourites.

How much you 'cut away to waves oin the shore', or else delve into the deepest of body parts is up to you. You need to warn people via your tags though if it's 'Adult Content' or involves things like BDSM or Male Pregnancy (MPreg).

I have a number of OTPs, as well as OTMultis (I am polyamorous, and so are my characters often). My original fandom was the BBC's Torchwood and my first OTP was Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones.

  • It's called 'slash' fiction for a reason . . .

You saw how I wrote 'Jack/Ianto there? That tells you 'although these characters never get together in canon, they do in my head and in this story. And yes, by 'get together', we do usually mean 'have sex'.

  • You are asked to 'suspend disbelief' in many instances . . . 'AU' means 'Alternative Universe'

People use fanfiction to explore the ideas that plague them, the 'plott bunnies' that run around and plague both their waking hours and their dreams. Some of these plot bunnies are clearly related to Alice's very own Whote Rabbit (or my own beloved Doctor Bob) and you may well be asked to follow them 'down the rabbit hole', to places where animals talk (and yes, there is Narnia fanfic), where the hero is a satyr, or where men can get pregnant (please god no details on how that actually works!).

The following are my personal favourites. If you don't like them please don't come back and tell me, because it will just lower my opinion of you as a reader.

Performance in a Leading Role - by Mad Lori
A Watson/Holmes AU. In this story 'art reflects life'. Our heroes are two actors, one an upcoming leading man and the other a less well-known comedic actor. They are paired in an 'edgy' film and this story follows what happens to them as both actors and people as a consequence.

War Children - by Nonymous
Warning: This story may be 'triggering' if you are transgendered or suffer from PTSD.
A Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes story. In this one Avengers never happened, and Bucky is just another war veteran. Steve is a beggar in wintertime NYC and he has a secret. Bucky is a PTSD-haunted wreck and a shut-in. Cameo by James Rhodes.

WinterHeart - by Goddamnhella
A Loki/Tony Stark story. It's my favourite of all time. It's (Jotun-)Loki-centric and asks the question of how one can attain Redemption. It's a non-canon AU, Loki/Tony Stark (NOT IronMan) romance, with a supporting cast of Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton, with a Pepper Potts cameo.

Shadow Child - by Kourion
Warning: This story tackles the subject of paedophilia and is true to life in how it does this. If you are a survivor of abuse you may find this story 'triggering' (I did, buit it is too good to stop reading once you start, regardless).
A Watson/Holmes story. Our heroes are looking into a case when Sherlock starts acting strangely. Watson will be stretched, challenged and horrified when he learns why his friend is discombobulated by their latest case. Not much sex, lots of angst. Cameos from Mycroft and Lestrade, and a juicy baddy you weill loathe and despise.

Northwest Passage - by Kryptaria
A John Watson/Sherlock Holmes story where Mycroft dumps his difficulot sibling on his old pal John Watson, who lives the life of a near-hermit up in the wilds of Canada. 'Fish out of water' shenanigans as Sherlock hits a steep learning curve.

Two Two One Bravo Baker - by abundantlyqueer
Another Watson/Holmes story. Sherlock, on a special mission, joins a company of warriors in Afghanistan. This one has a lot of explicit sex in it, and not just between the slahed pairing, btw. There are also a number of side stories set in the same AU and a lot of art done in tribute to this one.

Red Queen to Overwatch - by BootsandBlossoms and Kryptaria
A James Bond/Q story, with substantial input from 009 and cameos from other regular characters from the recent films. I can't tell you a lot about this one, I don't want to give Spoilers.
